I have a question for this group and would like to get some honest and frank responses. I was told earlier in a thread on this page that if I see any benefit to the Common Core curriculum that I do not belong in this group. Is this the consensus of the group as a whole, or is this the ramblings of a lone person. The reason I ask this is that I want to see real effective change happen in our education system. I see this group as having the potential to be a catalyst for that change. The problem that I have, though, is that much of what I see in the posts on this group are emotional knee-jerk comments that are not based necessarily in fact, but in anecdotal evidence of the dangers of common core. Personally, I want to see the control of the curriculum shift from the federal level to the closer level and see parents and educators work together to put together lesson plans that work for the children where they live rather than see a group of PHDs in Washington decide what is best for the children in South Jordan, UT. That being said, the only way we will ever get anyone to help us further that cause is if we take what is good from all systems and reject what is harmful or damaging, or just plain ludicrous from all systems. Much of my concern here revolves around the comments that I keep seeing about common core math and how different it is from what we learned as children. My problem with that concept is that I do not see different as bad. I see the benefit of children learning different ways to solve the same problems. Where I see a problem is when teachers or parents say Mine is the best way, so you have to do it my way. The other problem I see is that I have never personally witnessed any of my childrens teachers say that. If the teacher teaches my kids a method that confuses them or that they dont understand, and I am able to show them a different way to solve the same problem, their teachers have always accepted their work as long as they can show how they got the result. If I were to ever have that problem with a teacher, the first thing I would do would be to talk to the teacher and make a case for allowing my children to use the methods and practices that work best for them. So please let me know if there are more people in this group who think like me, or if I need to find a different place to try to enact real change in my childrens educational system.
