I have a rescue related issue that I really need help with! We run a horse rescue on the island and we are going to be putting together some educational material about proper horse care. Proper containment methods will be addressed. Here on the island, very very few horses are ever fenced. Many people have horses that have lived their entire lives tied to trees, with some being tied to a halter and others with a rope around the neck as I pictured below. While some horses here seem to handle it fine, others end up really hurting themselves during the training process, and some have died by strangulation when the rope is around their neck. I personally would rather see horses fenced for the most part and maybe tethered for some grazing time instead of spending a majority of their life on a rope. Many people on this island disagree and think it is perfectly normal for a horse to live this way. What is your opinion? Do you think this should be legal? Do you think it is safe? Should it be acceptable? I know this could spark a lot of debate, and honestly I hope it does because I want the people of this island to see what the other horse people of the world think about this and maybe learn from what you have to say. My goal is to educate the people here to find better ways of handling horses, so all of your input is really helpful! NOTE:The horse below is NOT my horse, it belongs to someone else and it is tied like this to a tree or in a grassy area unless he is being ridden. I wanted to show you exactly what I mean by tied to a tree by its neck.
