I have a sad story to share this week. Our little Cali calico kitty died just as she was turning 8 months old. (Grab a tissue) She entered our lives back in February, not long after we said good-bye to our Nutmeg. Cali was energetic and silly and pouncy and cuddly, like kitties should be. When I took her for a vet check, the vet took a little too long to listen to her heart, and I sensed something was wrong. Cali had a bad heart. The vet said we could visit a cardiologist and have surgery, which may or may not extend her life...or we could see if she outgrows it. I left with a heavy heart and a squirming kitten in my arms, and chose not to tell the kids. I prayed for little Calis problem and decided against costly surgery, which would be like a visit to a casino, gambling with money that may or may not win us a healthy kitty. Ive kept an eye on her, but this week turned really busy with back-to-school happenings and I neglected to notice that she was slowing down. Brady couldnt get her out from under the chair on Tuesday, and when I had time in the evening to see her, I knew it was the end. She was fighting it little a trooper, but she just couldnt breathe and it broke my heart. I called the vet to let them know we were coming, but getting her to the car was such a struggle, she bit my finger ~~(which ended up swollen and infected! Cat bites are pretty serious. Im on 7 days of Augmentin and need a tetanus shot!)~~As Brady and I tried to calm her down and wrap her in a towel, she laid down quietly and took her final breath. Between tears and sobs, we headed to our little pet cemetary in the backyard with a shovel and a lifeless bundled up kitty. The Finkbeiners will miss you, little Cali. Have fun pouncing at the feet of Jesus in heaven, and I know youll recognize us when were reunited someday.
