I have a scenario Id like to ask for some advice on. I have taken my 2006 Trailblazer to Northstar GM here in Creston. They were to replace my exhaust manifold (it was cracked) I was quoted $800(ish) and there was hopes it would be done in a day. Dropped it off on Friday the 14th, got a call later that day and said that they broke 7 of the bolts of in the head and they were unable to tap and drill them, after running through a few scenarios they said they would take off the head and send it to a machine shop in Cranbrook. The total cost was now going to be about $2500 total. After a great deal of thought I reluctantly gave approval and asked for a projected timeline, they said it should hopefully be done by today (Wednesday the 19th). After waiting most of today for a phone call I eventually phoned them at 3pm to check on the progress. They explained to be that in the process of trying to remove the head they then broke 3 of those bolts off in the block and they really have no viable solutions. So now they want me to possibly pay to replace the whole engine with a different used one they found in Cranbrook. theyre sorry but now its looking like its going to be close to $5000. I abruptly asked them to stop working on it. #1 I cant afford it and #2 it was supposed to be a $800 fix. Im trying to be as rational as possible, but this is the whole reason you take your vehicle into a mechanic. I still owe $6k on it so id prefer not to simply write it off.. I just dont understand why the problem seems to be solely my responsibility. Does the repair shop not have some type of legal responsibility to complete the repair or at-least subsidize it somewhat? Looking for some opinions..
