I have a serious question for Republican Liberty Caucus members in California: What the hell are you thinking? Do you really believe that the Republican Party best advances pro-liberty causes? If so, can you give me any example? Let’s look at one particular vote from last year to see why I see you as misguided. An issue that should be of the utmost importance to Liberty minded people is the preservation and manifest ion of the natural rights that our country’s founders attempted to protect with the Bill of Rights. Last year Republican Justin Amash attempted to amend H.R. 2397 (the appropriations bill for the NSA). His Amendment sought to end authority for the blanket collection of records under the Patriot Act. The amendment also sought to bar the NSA and other agencies from using Section 215 of the Patriot Act to collect records on US citizens. While this amendment failed due to Republican opposition, the loss was narrow, with slightly more than 40% of Republicans supporting it. But what about the Republican representatives from California? While more than 71% of Democrats from California’s representatives voted to modestly restrict the NSA, less than 27% of California Republicans supported the Amash Amendment. If you continue to support the Republican party because “They are better than the Democrats”, you will lose! If you feel that you are making inroads into the Republican Party and will one day turn them around, you are deluding yourself.
