I have a system that works where I run for 4-5 minutes and then walk for 1 minute. I do that for most of the race and it really works for me. I never intend to do this in a race, but it happens during 1/2 and full marathons. I seem to get into some peoples heads without ever intending to. Its like a cat and mouse game where I can tell some runners are convinced they should be faster than me, so they pass me, audibly out of breath as they cruise past. A ways in front of me, they start to walk and then I catch up to them and pass them. I can hear their heavy sigh as I go by and invariably, they start to run and have to pass me. This game goes on for a couple of miles. I try and stay disciplined and I stick to my system, keeping where they are out of mind. I dont know if I should be faster than they are and I dont care. I do know I can be faster than I was and thats all I try to care about. Ok, here they come again with one last pass. I can still hear them huffing and puffing and then ahead, they start to walk. Before I know it though, Ive passed them and they dont want to play anymore. Run YOUR race and dont worry about me. Youll have a lot more fun.
