I have a very real and very sad problem. My whippet is 5, she is beautiful, my princess. We have tried everything to keep her from running off all the time, but apart from being an escape artist, it appears to be in her genes to run. Her mother did it too. Her anxiety at being further than 5 feet away from me makes life hard. I built a huge run, with kennel for some where safe, outside in summer for her, but she chewed her way out and cried the whole time ( it is right next to the house and the kitchen) she is never left alone. she is always in sight and sound of us. We live on a farm and its not the confinement she has problems with (it is a very large run) but this urge to just run. at any opportunity, she is off! I could be taking her for a walk round the field, turn round and gone. she has had to be stitched back up after meeting barbed wire and last time she was off was spotted by a main road. Come the spring when the doors are open and its warm she is vulnerable again. She would suit a town house, but we are a farm. I cant bear to think my whippet and I arent compatible :( she has only known us and had never been fond of strangers, she has been unable to conceive and the vets have suspected a cyst on her kidney. I dont know what to do for the best and I feel time (winter indoors) is running out. Her safety is so important, but her quality of life is too. Even if I put a 10ft dear fence around the house, she would still get out, dig or climb. Any advice would be most welcome.
