I have almost five years of experience working in collections as a prime component of my job responsibilities as an accounts receivable administrator. There is no lie or excuse I have not heard. There is no fallacy that I have not encountered while employed in a professional position. I am also extremely good at collections. I attribute this to killing with kindness. I realized from the first collections call I ever made, which were to the financial elite of Toronto, that the old adage of catching more flies with honey than vinegar tends to ring true. Apologies for cliches. I learned quickly that when you speak to debtors with respect and empathy, they tend to pay you as quickly and as responsibly as they can. While if you speak to debtors with belligerence and rudeness, they will simply not bother to pay out of spite. Most persons who fall into debt learn quickly enough that the worst a collector a collection agency can do is report it against their credit rating; damage which once done, is then done. The reality being that once youve reported late payments or defaults against a persons credit rating, you have then used your only bargaining tool against a late payer. Once the damage is done, threats of doing the damage become a mute point. A person whos credit rating is already damaged, already has a damaged credit rating. I have always found it better to just work with the person who is behind on payments. The reality being that for any company, it is far more profitable to have a customer who falls behind on payments, catch up on payments and remain a loyal customer, than to simply lose the customer. Rudeness and belligerence will only accomplish exactly that. A person who falls behind on their payments and is treated poorly by the companies collectors or collection agencies, even when catching up on their payments will choose another company rather than maintain a relationship with the one who was rude or belligerent with them. This is just common sense. I have always proudly pointed out that in the five years of experience I have working in collections, I have never once had to send a client or customer to a collection agency; and was instead able to have those customers catch up on their late payments, and remain loyal customers. But again, I am not someone who fallacious rhetoric will work on. I can tell when someone is lying to me, and I can tell when someone has an ulterior motive to their statements.
