I have always been upset about the terrible lack of care homes for Elders that are actually at their communities so those Elders can remain near their families. For my Friends at Grassy Narrows, who also have the double whammy of health impacts from Mercury Poisoning and Elders who naturally need care as they get older, it is really hard for them. My own Father had dementia and physical problems and had to live in a care home. It was a constant battle to make sure they took care of him properly. My Family even had to launch three investigations and an Access to information requests to improve Dads care and he was in a brand new nursing home in Calgary! How must it be for Elders in Indigenous communities who have no care facilities in their community? Any ideas of how to improve the situation for On-Reserve Elders?
