I have always dreamt of catching a flight and being seated next to a Mr Darcy type who is outrageously interesting and laughs at all my jokes. But no, it seems my life is merely a cautionary tale to educate the younger gen on what not to do and how not to do it. Today, I got on a flight and I was sandwiched between two large men who were both drinking heavily and compromising my personal space. At one point, one of them accidentally elbowed me in the chest twice and didnt think anything of it. I was feeling a little miserable but then I smelt lasagne coming from the food trays and anyone who knows me knows I love my food more than anything on this earth. I was so excited because on the three flights I had caught so far, all they served me was curry for the Moslem meal. My dinner was served and I was uber excited to see what was under the foil, I opened it up and saw that it was once again curry. I was so angry, I started ranting about airlines being racist, that they only serve Muslims curry, that not all Muslims come from the Sub Continent, that I was served curry for breakfast --without rice -- on my previous flight...WHO SERVES CURRY FOR BREAKFAST?!!!, that my salad and cake probably has curry in it too, that I was going to protest this injustice and demand Muslims get curry free meals! In the meantime, the guy next to me was rolling on the floor laughing at my curry rant and was snorting uncontrollably. He then asked me permission to share my rant as his FB status, I said sure and then we got to talking and we spent the next two hours talking race relations, what it was like growing up in a township during apartheid, safaris and family life. He may not have been my Mr Darcy but he was a wise gentleman who gave me some incredible advice about life choices in what turned out to be a blessed flight. During our deep and meaningful, a flight attendant approached me and asked me how I found my meal, I told him it was delicious and that I loved curry, once again the man beside me lost it laughing. I guess there was wisdom in being served curry all along...curry brings people together.
