I have always had a great respect for all branches of the military - TopicsExpress

I have always had a great respect for all branches of the military and the honor and respect that each branch held for the other. This includes our various branches of government the has in returned held respect for our armed services. My first recall of a military salute came when I was 7 years old and I went to Sand Point Naval Air Station near Seattle with my grandfather. My Grandfather was a retired Navy Commander. When we drove to the gate a young Marine MP snapped to attention and firmly gave my Grandfather a salute and said Good Morning Sir and my Grandfather returned the salute and said Good Morning Marine. That evening after supper I asked my Grandfather about the salute. He told me how it came about from the days of knights who would raise their visors in recognition of friendly knights and that the salute was done open handed that indicated no weapon in hand thus the firm open palm all fingers in line salute. As a young soldier in the army I found it very common and a part of every day life to salute offices and have the salute returned in due military respect. A few years ago I attend the funeral of my father-in-law a former Infantry Captain of WWII. The coordinator asked all attendees to raise at the playing of Taps the coordinator also request that All Veterans please in respect for this fallen soldier return a final salute. It was then when it all came together about the salute.....its about Honor, Tradition but most of all Respect. Thanks for hearing me out. Max Ponder
