I have always loved this song giving me the chance to sing in two voices. Yes, I am continuing with my presentation of the ABCs of the Golden Decade of Music 1965-1974, where I am selecting the artists alphabetically and playing selections of their songs I liked or found influential from that Golden Decade. I am currently in the Cs and playing some of the memorable songs from Chicago, a band formed in 1967 in Chicago, IL. The group had a steady stream of hits throughout the 70s and 80s, 2nd only to The Beach Boys in Billboard singles and albums chart success among American bands. Over the course of their career they have had five number-one albums and 21 top-ten singles, accumulating 23 gold, 18 platinum, and 8 multi-platinum albums. The next song I am selecting is a personal favorite, “Dialogue, a song written by Robert Lamm for their album Chicago V (1972). On the album the song is over 7 minutes long and is divided into two tracks, with an edited version of the song released as a single in October 1972, eventually reaching #24 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. In Part I, the songs lyrics are a dialogue between two young people with different views. The first person (whose lines are sung by Terry Kath) is very concerned about events of the early 1970s, such as war, starvation, and repression... closing in around. The second person (whose lines are sung by Peter Cetera) maintains that everything is fine. Musically, the song is also a dialogue between Terry Kaths rhythm guitar and Peter Ceteras bass, which is all the more interesting as the songwriting credit went to keyboardist Robert Lamm. As Part I comes to a close, Terry Kaths character embraces the other characters worldview, saying you know you really eased my mind; / I was troubled by the shapes of things to come. The response: Well, if you had my outlook your feelings would be numb - youd always think that everything was fine. Part II contains more optimistic lyrics sung by the whole band, including we can make it better and we can change the world now and points the way by noting we can save the children. https://youtube/watch?v=uWODczdgGDQ
