I have always taken mild offense at the term cafeteria catholic-- derisively directed at those who arbitrarily pick and choose which parts of church policy they agree or disagree with-- but now, the shoe (of the fisherman) is on the other foot. The Gordon Gekko Catholics (Greed is good...) are getting slapped around by a Pontiff who appears to give a crap about hypocrisy. Reminding us of the Golden Calf idolatry so common among fiercely money-grubbing Catholics and the rampant, unconscionable poverty ravaging the world, Pope Francis is seeking a more compassionate path for his church. Those critics who describe the church as a ship without a rudder dont seem to understand what the word rudder means. Just because hes turning the ship in a different, better direction, doesnt mean there is no rudder. Hang on, neo-con Catholics...Its gonna be a bumpy ride. BTW, if you take a moment to think about it, most of us are cafeteria Catholics.
