I have always told my children that, when they are old enough to think logically, they are free to choose whatever religion they deem fit or none at all if this choice makes them better human beings... whats important is that they involve themselves in a system of beliefs that prevent them from discriminating against other people or taking advantage of them... I personally believe in Jesus Christ or, more importantly, what he stood for and still stands for- LOVE and COMPASSION... other religions are basically based on these very same principles... its when delusional human beings twist whatever the tenets of their faiths are to suit their own prejudices and biases that organized religions become corrupted... I wont argue theology because I am not qualified to do so... but, I do have a mind that leads me to question a lot of things... why do religious fanatics ridicule/maim/kill those who dont believe in the same things they do? Christians, Muslims, even Buddhists do this and it just is WRONG... who gave a person the right to shove his/her beliefs down somebody elses throat?... with regards to my religion, why is it that Christians/Catholics automatically presume that when somebody is survives a natural calamity or an illness or accident, OUR god is responsible for that persons good fortune?... look up Wolff Blitzer of CNN and how he told a tornado survivor that she must be thanking God for saving her only to be told that shes an atheist... Ill never presume to speak for Jesus Christ but, based on his teachings, feeling superior to other people wasnt what he taught... I cringe everytime Cebuanos gloat that we get saved everytime theres a natural calamity because of our Sto. Niño... so, were lucky because Magellan chose to land here and other people can just be wiped out because they were unlucky enough to be somewhere else other than Cebu?... or why is it that we are taught to venerate Mama Mary but our religion treats women with such low regard that they can never be our Gods representatives here on earth as priestesses?... or, why dont we let our priests marry when we place such a high premium on marriage making it one of our Sacraments and the lack of it such a sin that our Catholic Church permitted the separation of babies from their unwed mothers in Ireland and the DUMPING of these children in a septic tank because, being the offspring of unwed mothers, they cant be buried on consecrated ground?... or, why do some of our priests and some Catholic laypeople spew so much vitriol against those who chose to have people of the same gender as their partners but keep silent about or even defend Catholic priests who rape children?... give me the name of a priest here in our country who has raised his voice against the the crime of child molestation by their fellow priests from the pulpit and I will bow down before him in respect and admiration... on the other side of the fence, why are Muslims being told by some of their religions leaders that killing those who dont believe in the same god as theirs would facilitate their being transported to paradise?... Rafa Nadal is an atheist and he is not a bad person, far from it... he said that he has seen what bad things people have done in the name of organized religion and he wants no part of it... he doesnt cheat, he doesnt put down other people, he loves and respects his parents and elders... if we need to believe in a divine being to keep us honest even when nobody is looking and for us to treat other people the right way, then we must... but, if doing so makes us arrogant, pompous, self-righteous, and bigots, whats the point?
