I have an amazing job. I sit here and make things up that have no basis in reality other than our shared human experiences, and people read my bullshit and are actually (in some cases, at least—thank you, one stars) entertained by it. I was reading a passage I wrote a few days ago and thinking, where the hell did that come from? I have no real idea. I had somehow managed to pull it out of the overflowing bank of b.s. in my head and wrote it down. The process was no doubt torturous, but the rewards are plentiful. Writers are the only people in this business who stare at a blank screen and create something out of nothing. Just think about that. Remember it. And those who profit off that ability should think about it too, because I dont believe they do very often. I believe that *they* believe that a book is not a book until theyve added their stamp to it—whatever that might be. And Im sorry, but thats utter nonsense, and in a smarter, less polite, less elitist society, wed laugh at them for ever thinking such a thing. If youre also a writer, always remember that you are doing something that many people attempt and few actually finish. When times are tough, when your confidence is low, as it often is in our profession (because were told by know-nothings that we arent good enough), remember that you dont need to rely on anyone else to do your work. You are the creator. You are the maker. Its an amazing job.
