I have asked a teacher to talk with me about what she feels we could do to help our students performance in Sumter County Schools. Immediately, she said; let the children go outside for recess from grades 1 through 5. She explained that they are cooped up all day, without the benefit of regular physical education or play. Older students have more structured after school activities, such as team sports. But the elementary school children do not have the same sports programs. She is certain that a break in the day, with supervised play, would help each child stay more focused and be happier. From a nursing standpoint, I see true value in Vitamin D exposure and fresh air. On a personal note, I could not sit in a desk all those hours without some kind of fresh air break. So could we please advocate for recess for grades 1 through 5 in Sumter County schools!
