I have been an Overseas Emergency worker for the British Red Cross - TopicsExpress

I have been an Overseas Emergency worker for the British Red Cross for the last 7 years and like my colleagues in the BRC and other charities we have attended many disasters worldwide, the latest in the Philippines. Nothing can ever prepare you for what you see when you get there or how you will feel when you have to leave, knowing that there is so much more to do. In 2010 I flew out to support after the Haiti Earthquake and this was to change my attitude to life forever. Its very easy when we are watching a disaster unfolding at home to detach ourselves from it, I even heard someone making a joke about it in the supermarket yesterday.. Please dont underestimate how challenging, and desperate this latest situation is and how desperate these people are right now for the very basics we take for granted every day, food, shelter, medicines, water.. It is incredibly challenging when you are supporting on the ground in these areas, roads and communications are down and often they become a lawless society for a while, but the Aid agencies are on the ground, assessing the situation and now those items those communities desperately need can start to make their way there. I know many people will be focused on Christmas and their own families, however if you can spare some time to make even the smallest donation, you wont be making their Christmas special, you will be providing them with a lifeline, the greatest gift we can give to another person. I cannot imagine what it must be like to have lost 11 members of my family through something like this, I hope none of us ever have to...
