I have been asked by Lara to pass on this message to people who attended yesterdays seminar - I also want to say thank you so much to the people who came and I hope you enjoyed it! In last seminars we talked a bit about Neurolinguistic programming and the theory that liars look to one sideand truth tellers to another. I mentioned that I had been involved in research about that and that it was basically nonsense. I thought I’d give you the actual reference (Mann et al. (2012). The Direction of Deception: Neuro-Linguistic Programming as a Lie Detection Tool. It can be downloaded from here link.springer/article/10.1007/s11896-011-9097-8). It shows that perhaps it isn’t as much nonsense as I said last night, but pretty close. I’d encourage you to actually look at the effect sizes in this study. It is a good example of a case where small effects can be statistically significant due to a large sample. The article also gives a little discussion about how you can visualise effect sizes. Please note that eta2 and Cohen’s d are both measures of effect size, although there are differences between them, for the purpose of this article you can see them as equivalent. Thanks for attending last night. I hope you enjoyed the talk.
