I have been asked the question why I have taken the time in organising this Charity Fundraising Event for RP Fighting Blindness several times and I thought I would share with you all too. I, along with many people from the Asian community, suffer from Retinitis Pigmentosa for around 16 years, however, only in the last year or so I have finally come to terms with living with my eye condition and not be afraid to speak openly about it. I am slowly beginning to realise the assistance available to all Sight Impaired people in all aspects of daily life. I felt I had missed out on quite a lot, in terms of education, employment and socially as I spent so many years hiding away simply for the fear of being judged. I dont want others to go through the same and would like to make them aware of services,facilities and opportunities open to them in order for them to live their life as independently as possible and be proud of it. The day is scheduled to include Speakers from charity organisations who are all offering services to the Visually Impaired. They will discuss what their roles are, how to contact them or your nearest centre, what services/support they provide, whether it be mobility, technology, employment, education, sport, social activities, or just general day to day living. The day has been organised for the whole family to enjoy as there will be challenges to take part in, dazzling entertainment to watch & listen to, opportunities to win amazing raffle prizes and to indulge in tasty indian cuisine at lunch and refreshments too. A chance to make new friends sharing similar experiences and the opportunity to talk with professionals on a one-to-one basis. Whether you are someone who is living with sight loss or are a friend, family member/relative, or employer/employee who are sure to learn something in how to help them deal with it and cope better. All sales of tickets and raffle will be donated towards the Research/Clinical Trials Fund for RP Fighting Blindness to give us all suffering from the disease a more positive hope for the future in preventing total loss of vision. Together we can raise awareness of the needs of Sight Impaired people everywhere, show them understanding and support when required and from the knowledge you will gain from the event, understand yourself the challenges we face.
