I have been asked why I do not do percentage chances for - TopicsExpress

I have been asked why I do not do percentage chances for precipitation. You know like 40 percent chance of thunderstorms. The reason for that is simple........that is a meaningless say nothing phrase that sounds really cool. Since the dawn of meteorology on TV, weathermen have been using this both to convey what the risks of rainfall are for any given area, and to make them sound more impressive and knowledgeable. But it is completely meaningless in reality. I much prefer to use the slight chance, chance, likely, and going to as the ways to convey what the odds of precip are. It is far easier to understand and relate to. I think it does a much better job of portraying what the odds are. And, that is something that everybody understands on the basic level. REALLY understands. There is a lot in broadcast meteorology that is smoke and mirrors designed to be almost slight of hand. It makes for very impressive phrasing, but in reality, it does not say much at all. And, the people out there do not really understand what is being said at all. I am always going to present the weather and what is going on in the most simple direct terms that people understand. I am not in this to dazzle you, I am in this to help you know what is going to happen.....or is likely to.
