I have been assigned the age 6 years. This was 1966-67. I was in 1st grade at Foothill Elementary School in Bay Canyon in Santa Barbara. I asked my mother to buy me a pair of two-toned white and brown shoes that looked like early Adidas shoes, and I wore them with dresses - always a little off, sartorially; or was I an iconoclast? My best friend was Deanna Patronyk, a Polish-American girl who lived down the street from us on Via Regina. Together, we played Parcheesi and listened to her brother’s Rubber Soul album. I used to watch the big TV in her living room (50 inches, possibly) because my mother never let me watch TV during the day, and years later, I cruelly don’t allow my daughter to watch TV too much, either. The most memorable day of that year was Christmas, when I received a pink bicycle, and my father ran beside me for a little while as I rode it down the hill from our house, all the way to the end of the street. He gave up running, and shouted to me to pedal, but I just stayed on and rode that bike to the end of the block, and when the momentum gave out at the bottom of the hill, I simply tipped over and fell into a woodpile in a neighbor’s yard. I still ride my bike every morning in the summer, and I now use the pedals. I remember visiting the home of a friend of my mother’s, and I remember seeing a Peter Max poster on the son’s wall. Weekends, we went to Goleta Beach, twenty minutes away, driving down the highway with the palm trees rising in a sun-soaked reflection in the distance. Year Six was pretty great; I have no complaints. I like this so much better than taking a quiz to find out what character from the Jetsons I am most like. Like this status and Ill give you an age.
