I have been aware of Federal agencies snooping capabilities (the technology possessed by them and initially designed by outside private companies) since the 1980s. Frankly, at the time, I did not believe that NSA would find the time and use such loose searches (read as broad searches) that the technology would be so abused. My reasoning was that carefully defined and constructed searches would waste less time and provide higher quality information to CIA and NSA. Apparently the great minds in the executive branch had a different opinion! BTW, the knowledge gained at the time was made available through participation in the so-called due diligence process of evaluating purchase of a firm for use of its corporate record and DARPA project history, plus friendship with a person in the business of manufacturing sniffers.
