I have been browsing a Flickr account of photos of my old School (Lord Williamss in Thame, Oxfordshire). Founded in 1559, it stayed in the same building until 1872. In that year, the old Grammar school closed, and according to the caption of one photograph, this was the reported reason: 1872 - the old Grammar School closed following the disastrous Headmastership of Dr T.B Fookes, a man of ungovernable temper. He retired to Hampstead on a pension of half his salary and died in 1874. He had been appointed in 1841 and was a man of a violent manner, who seemed to spend most of his time thrashing and expelling boys, playing the violin, and growing potatoes in the Schools playground. Ah, the good old days before the National Curriculum and OFSTED....
