I have been fiddling around with how to do cobblestones and think - TopicsExpress

I have been fiddling around with how to do cobblestones and think I finally nailed it. Ive seen plastic sheets as well as paper, but began playing with the foam from take-out boxes. Not only does it work well, but it is the same height between the top of the rail and the railroad tie. The application of this is big I think as it can be applied to all stone types (walls, foundations, tunnels, etc). It also eliminates putting wet compound on the tracks and also allows for curves and turnouts. And you cant beat the price . . FREE! To mark, I lightly scribed 6W lines with a homemade stylus; I used a bamboo shish kabob skewer. It is sharp, but because it is dull wood, it does not snag the foam but depress it. I tried a sharp ball point pen but the ink bleeds through the acrylic. I then alternated with 9-12L blocks and rounded and dented accordingly. To weather it more, I sprinkled cat litter (clean!) onto my bench and pressed the foam onto it. While this is the base coat, I continue experimenting with a joint compound and paint slurry which really acts as both a filler and paint. I will need a great deal of this, but look forward to seeing the end result with an India ink wash and powders.
