I have been following the story of the alleged smuggling of narcotics by a Ghanaian lady into the United Kingdom and the statement by the Narcotics Control Board for a few days. Sadly the more I read the statement the more confused I get. To start with the NACOB claim the arrest was a collaboration between the Ghanaian and UK authorities, if thats the case then the action could be seen as laudable. However a few missing links bother me. To start with the statement alleges that the lady had one case of luggage hand carried unto the British Airways Flight, in this era of international terrorism and blowing up of planes; is this common practice in Ghana? We have been made aware of the ladys name on her Austrian passport but given only a passport number for her Ghanaian passport. The question is whats the name on the Ghanaian passport? I also wonder if it is prudent for the NACOB knowing that the lady had committed a crime in Ghana to allow her to leave their jurisdiction? I may be naive but unless there is something really covered from an intelligence point, this action is a bit strange. Considering that the average cost of a trial in the UK for such crimes is £3000 per day and by end of trial the total cost the total cost to the UK tax payer will be minimum £30,000, were the UK authorities being prudent with their money? Should the lady be found guilty and receive the normal sentence for such crimes of 8 years, the cost of housing her in a UK prison would be £360,000 (yearly cost of housing a prisoner in the UK is £45,000 per annum). Bringing the total cost of this collaboration to £390,000 minimum, a bill that will be charged to the UK taxpayer. Is it not strange that in this era of austerity, the UK authorities will opted for this form of collaboration? Lastly the actions of the BNI can be classified as strange to say the least. Yes Citifm may have erred in the initial reportage of the story and may have implicated an innocent Ghanaian but does that constitute a matter that compromises the state? When the former boss of the company that used to run security in the airport was arrested, allegations were made trying to link my good friend Larry, we all know they were mere allegations, were those who made them arrested? When the owner of Le Baron hotel was arrested, allegations were also made by some trying to link Nana Akuffo Addo to him, we all know they were mere allegations, did the BNI get involved and invite those involved? These are the things that bother me in this matter, to me there are more questions than there are answers.
