I have been involved in a debate with some individuals who seem to idolize Snowden as a hero for exposing the Spying on US Citizens by the NSA. I laughed and asked them to research their history. Perhaps look at J. Edgar Hoover. In August 1919 Hoover became head of the Bureau of Investigations new General Intelligence Division—also known as the Radical Division because its goal was to monitor and disrupt the work of domestic radicals. Americas First Red Scare was beginning, and one of Hoovers first assignments was to carry out the Palmer Raids. Hoover and his chosen assistant, George Ruch monitored a variety of U.S. radicals with the intent to punish, arrest, or deport them. Targets during this period included Marcus Garvey; Rose Pastor Stokes and Cyril Briggs; Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman; and future Supreme Court justice Felix Frankfurter, whom Hoover maintained was the most dangerous man in the United States. Oh Myyy, you mean the Government was spying on US Citizens some 80 years before the NSA...Say it aint so JOE!!! Then to call Snowden a hero is a joke. He is a puppet and now a pawn being used by Comrade Putin. When his usefulness is through he will be a footnote in the history books lost forever in the Gulags. He committed Treasonous Acts by definition and hides under Putins skirt refusing to face his accusers and defend himself, if he truly believes what he did was from his moral conscience. Further, he cowardly hides not allowing his accusers to face him. History is full of cowards that did treasonous acts and ran or committed suicide rather then stand and he really heard. Conversely, history is full of person, whom out of moral conscience, did treasonous acts because they sincerely saw some immorality they wanted to expose and stand against. Ralph Waldo Emerson in his Poem A Nations Strength said it best. What makes a nation’s pillars high And its foundations strong? What makes it mighty to defy The foes that round it throng? It is not gold. Its kingdoms grand Go down in battle shock; Its shafts are laid on sinking sand, Not on abiding rock. Is it the sword? Ask the red dust Of empires passed away; The blood has turned their stones to rust, Their glory to decay. And is it pride? Ah, that bright crown Has seemed to nations sweet; But God has struck its luster down In ashes at his feet. Not gold but only men can make A people great and strong; Men who for truth and honor’s sake Stand fast and suffer long. Brave men who work while others sleep, Who dare while others fly... They build a nation’s pillars deep And lift them to the sky. Would Emerson see Snowden a hero or coward?
