I have been nominated by my darling daughter Katrina Cox to take the ALS ice bucket challenge. Im not normally keen to jump on bandwagons, but not to do this challenge would seem a bit mean - especially as its supposed to be for charity. However, from what I read on here, theres quite a bit of confusion about exactly what is ALS, plus theres controversy about other, unrelated charities hijacking the whole idea. Anyhow - I will follow the trend by texting ICED55 £5 to 70070 to contribute to the Motor Neurone Disease Association, but I also wanted to support a cancer charity as part of the ice bucket challenge. I have decided to do this by making a donation to Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research by sponsoring Hannah Carroll who is running the Bristol Half Marathon to raise funds on their behalf. I have (arguably selfish!) reasons for wanting to support this charity and as I have recently taken up running myself, I have some idea of the effort involved by Hannah. I will not conform to all the rules of the challenge as I am not going to nominate anyone else at the moment. At least that way I dont lose any friends. For those interested, a bit of Googling produced this about MND and ALS: Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is the name given to a group of diseases in which the nerve cells (neurones) that control muscles undergo degeneration and die. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is just one of this group. Progressive Muscular Atrophy (PMA), Progressive Bulbar Palsy (PBP), and Primary Lateral Sclerosis (PLS) are other subtypes of motor neurone disease. Although MND is the widely used generic term in this country, ALS is used more generically elsewhere, such as in the US - and it seems that this is where this challenge originated. So for the purpose of this challenge, MND and ALS can be considered to mean the same thing.
