I have been noticing a new verbal affectation among a certain few - TopicsExpress

I have been noticing a new verbal affectation among a certain few Springfield TV news reporters lately, and it bugs me. I wouldnt even bother to mention it, except that I heard at least one national reporter (Weather Channel?) do the same thing yesterday, and I wonder how far this thing has spread around the country, and why they do that. Here in Springfield, the affectation seems to have been adopted only by female reporters, so far as I have heard. It might be different wherever you are. I am talking about pronouncing street as sta-REET, clouds pronounced ca-LOUDS, crime as car-RIME. Where did this come from, and when will it go away?
