I have been pondering whether or not to say anything about the death of Robin Williams. And if I am going to say anything what it would be. I dont want to be trite or cliche and just repeat a thousand platitudes about depression and how we need to be kind or supportive. None of those things will make the smallest dint in the wall of despair around a depressed person. I dont want to just paint a rainbow on the surface and ignore the anguish underneath. To a depressed person that is just a giant smack in the face. Oh I dont mean the occasional blue day the average person gets occasionally. The days when you think of those who have passed on or the things that might have been if only I had done such and such. Those will pass with time and the healing spirit most people are blessed with. I am talking about a miasma so deep that even the sight of a rainbow makes you think “Oh look there is some more rain.” Telling a severely depressed person to cheer up and think of the good things in life is the emotional equivalent of stooping down next to an accident victim and patting their shoulder and murmuring “There there it will be alright.” It is a nice sentiment but hardly helpful. About the only thing that can help is listening. There is no guarantee that being a good listener will actually help but it will at least keep things from getting worse. I will freely admit I am not a psychologist so I cant offer any real answers. Heck I dont even fully understand all the questions. All I know is all the people I have ever dealt with who suffer from depression need love and support and an ear to bend... but just listen quietly and dont try to fix it.... The only one who can is the person themselves and god. So in conclusion I will miss Robin Williams. He was funny and bright and a half bubble off plumb. May he rest in peace and his tortured soul find peace at last. As one person eloquently put it. You are free Genie.
