I have been reading a great book about indoor plants called, How - TopicsExpress

I have been reading a great book about indoor plants called, How to Grow Fresh Air. It lists the best plants for indoor toxins, the whys and hows and all that good junk. What it skips is pets ~ which plants are toxic! So I am cross referencing with houseplant 411 site to figure out which air purifiers are non toxic if pets eat the leaves. Sadly the list is short. I know I have lots of pet loving friends so wanted to share what I found: Areca Palm ~ hands down the BEST air purifier for indoors. I person could live with 4 of these plants in a bottle (with a lid) and not die from lack of air. It creates mass amounts of oxygen as well as filtering out pollution. Its completely non toxic. It prefers part sun. Super easy to care for but this plant likes to be misted regularly. A well lit room with a window should be fine. They rank 8.5 on the fresh air plant scale Lady Palm ~ same info as the areca but not as fast with the cleaning. Ferns ~ these are amazing at creating oxygen. They are also some of the best filters on earth. However they can be picky in the house so make sure to read up on their care. They love humidity and being misted. They are non toxic to pets and rank 7.5 on the fresh air plant scale Parlor Palms ~ Chamadorea Elegans~ semi shade ~ Needs the leaves to be misted often but other then that easy to grow. non toxic Prayer Plant It ranks 6.0 as it doesnt do as great of a job filtering the air as the above plants but its pretty and smaller then the palms. Semi shade and is non toxic Spider Plant~ everyone is familiar with this hanging plant. It needs semi shade to semi sun and is pretty easy to care for as long as you remember to water it. It does a decent job of cleaning the air. Not as good as the palms but not as big either so fits in smaller areas. NON TOXIC to pets NOW for those people with really stubborn pets and would like a level #1 toxic plant ~ meaning it will burn their mouth a bit or taste really bitter but wont hurt them here is a list of those type of plants. snake plant ~ this plant is best in a bedroom. Everyone should have 1 in their bedroom. It creates oxygen at night. It does a decent job filtering the air but the real power is due to the night time extra oxygen it creates while your sleeping. It does have a level 1 toxicity. Rubber Tree Plant~ This is an amazing filter plant! It cleans EVERYTHING out of the air. It ranks 8.0 but is a level 1 toxic plant. corn plant/tree: these things are also amazing air cleaners. They will also grow in any old corner of the house as long as they have some light. They are a #1 toxicity but rank 8 on the clean air scale Weeping Fig Tree (Ficus) ~ great for cleaning the air as well with a #1 toxic Schefflera Plant ~ another great chemical cleaner with a #1 toxicity for pets. I hope that helps some of my pet loving friends =) I have seen all of these plants at the local Home Depot so no super hard searching for them!
