I have been riding the bus daily for about three years now. There seem to be many unspoken courtesies. Everyday, I see people get on the bus who do not have sufficient fare on their bus pass. Often times these are mothers, students, or people with with laundry/groceries (people who have a lot on their plate) 99% of the time one of three things happen. 1) the driver continues, allowing the passenger to find cash on their person. 2) another passenger comps them. 3) depending on the situation, the bus driver lets them ride for free. Today I got on the bus, arms loaded with work supplies, and my card rang up empty. I apologized to the driver and started stowing my bags so I could get cash out of my wallet. Rather than continue, he parked the bus and started yelling at me to get off his bus. A male passenger got up and started posturing, yelling that if I cant afford to ride I should get the hell off. So I put my money away, collected my things and allowed myself to get booted off. I get harassed regularly on the bus, for my hair, tattoos. By men, drunk and sober. I see it as one of the drawbacks of public transit. But today hurt. Being the person who oftentimes comps peoples rides or helps with their strollers, I thought I would receive just a little respect and patience. Not the case. I need to figure out a safer bike route because I am done with this shit for a while.
