I have been thinking about the appointment I had yesterday. From the response I had to my status and having spoken to a few other people, I think Im right in assuming that not everyone who gets cancer automatically gets genetics testing.......but our mum was being actively pushed to have the test by her consultant AND the type of cancer she had put her in the top 15% of people at most risk of having the gene, thats not the top 15% of the population, but the top 15% of people with cancer!!.......so surely that should mean something?! If mum had had a different cancer, maybe a more common one, they would be using the same chart to decide whether we were eligible for testing. BUT the facts are that mum was at much higher risk than 85% of other cancer sufferers and was being encouraged to have the test, it just happened that she was too poorly (and maybe a little scared/reluctant to find out?). Youd think that would make a difference.
