I have been thinking about the kerfluffle over the election of a Mecklenburg County Commission chair. Traditionally the top vote-getter is elected chair however it seems to me that there are some changes to the structure of the County Commission that might be beneficial and would fix this question once and for all. One option is to directly elect the Chairman (as we do with the Mayor of the City of Charlotte and the 6 Towns). Another would be to just eliminate the other 2 at-large positions so that there is only ONE at-large representative (plus the 6 existing districts). Since the 6 districts are evenly split between Ds and Rs at three (3) each, the individual who runs for Mayor and wins would guide the direction of the new smaller and more efficient board of 7 (instead of a board of 9). The law allows these changes. I doubt the Democrats would support them but perhaps the GOP in Raleigh might consider it to stop the internal intra-party squabbling among the Democrats.
