I have been thinking about what makes an American an American. Is it waving the flag? protesting that the flag is banned from schoolrooms,? (not to my knowledge/experience) wearing a flag lapel pin? Singing the National Anthem at sporting events? Holding your hand over your heart? I think not. While all of these are symbols of ones love of country, it is not what makes one an American So...what does? After a great deal of thought I believe one shows true Americanism by VOTING, by being informed on voter issues, and backgrounds/principle of candidates. One shows Americanism by fulfilling JURY DUTY obligations. One shows love of America by upholding the CONSTITUTION, not just lip service, but by paying attention that rights are not violated, even if someone elses right is not part of your belief system. An American pays taxes, FAIR taxes, an American company does not flee to another country (in name only) to avoid paying a FAIR share. An American looks out for his fellow man, and extends a helping hand when needed. An American does not build his wealth by taking from others. An American does not try to undo all the rights and benefits that labor, womens, gay, medical, anti-war groups, and others have fought and died for. Which, by the way, benefit us all. Those are my thoughts. What are yours? r
