I have been thinking today about how isolated we have become as - TopicsExpress

I have been thinking today about how isolated we have become as individuals. As social media has taken off through the years, we gained speed of communication and the acquiring of information, and the ability to be in touch with others near and far. We now spend hours playing games, talking on the phone, texting, and flipping around on Facebook and Twitter. But actually spending time in person, seeing one another and hearing one another, is becoming more rare. We are so busy. But we need to stop. We need to look in the eyes and into the soul of another human being, and listen with our ears and our hearts. I read recently that we humans are more emotionally and relationally starved than ever, in spite of the vast reaches that social media allows us. It has become an epidemic. The suicide rate has risen to astronomical proportions, and depression is just sadly commonplace. So it is time for each of us to step out of our box and see, hear, and touch the people around us. We need to be aware and sensitive to those who are in need of our time and our voice and our touch. Did you know that research has shown that there is incredible power...healing power...just in the human voice and the human touch? Nothing can replace a hug...actual human contact...and there is no adequate replacement for actual voice to voice and face to face contact. There is power in physical touch to heal because it actually releases chemicals into our bloodstream that bring that healing and warmth to our bodies, and our very souls. And the human voice? Studies show that no electronic device through which our voice is conveyed has the same power to help and heal as the human voice in person. Phone calls are nice, and sometimes thats all we have. I talk to my closest friend every single day on the phone, and I love it. But yet, I still miss her because though we talk through media daily, we rarely see one another. Hearing her tell me of her lifes trials and triumphs in person...hearing her contagious laugh...well, nothing could replace that! And that is by Gods design. He designed us to need one another. The human voice in person, like a hug or physical touch, causes chemicals to be released in us that bring healing to our bodies and our hearts. We truly need one another, and no one is exempt. Social media has made it so easy for us to ignore each other, in actuality. Our busyness has drawn us to the ease of communication through social media, rather than making the time for face to face contact. And we are losing something in the midst of it all. So, I pray that today, we will consider closing our laptops and foregoing text communication, and instead, making it a point to ask someone in our lives to join us for lunch or a cup of coffee. Look into someones eyes, see their need, spend time with someone, and give a hug. I pray we will all desire and work towards restoring the lost art of person to person contact. I cant help but wonder how it could change our world and staggering statistics if today, and everyday, we reached out to do this! And it might just make a difference in your own life as well :)
