I have been told that I am a privileged person - I guess they are right. I am privileged because – I had a dad and mother who were married in 1941 and was always loyal to each other- I had a dad who worked 10 to 12 hour days in a cotton mill (except for the two or three times per year they would be on short time) and then come home to work a two acre garden so we would have food to eat – I had a church family that taught me right from wrong – I had parents that taught me the Word of God and how it would change my life for the better- I had parents that taught me respect for others (no matter race, creed or culture) and to obey authority because according to Romans and I Peter, it is the biblical thing to do- I had a mother who taught me how to treat ladies with great respect when I was with them- I had a father that taught me how to deal with bullies and fight like a man against injustice- Here are some of the things I had because I was privileged – Roof over my head – (because my father used his $500 GI Bill money for being a WW 2 vet and paid the down payment on a piece of land with a small 100 year old house that he fixed one pay check at the time till it was livable) Food in my belly –(because my dad grew peas, beans, veggies and my mother knew how to cook, can and preserve things. My mother could make white gravy from lard grease a little flour and some salt and pepper… we ate beans from the garden, eggs from our few chickens and bread home made from lard and flour) New shoes –(at least once a year I could get a new pair of $4.99 converse tennis shoes before school started, my old pair then became my play shoes – and yes, duck tape works great to holding those soles in place for a while) Fancy Clothes – (at the start of each school year I would get two pair of pants, and two shirts along with the shoes, and when they needed repair my mother could sew and patch very well) TV – (granted it was a small black and white set, but we could get 2 or 3 channels and on Monday night I could stay up to watch “The Big Valley” with my mother) Nice Cars – (we owned a 57 Chevy…voom voom.. however it was a 4 door and we had it in 1967 so it was not the sought after classic at that time) Things to play with – (like my $8.99 basketball rim which hung on a 4 x 4 board on the side of an oak tree, my 2.99 football which was thrown around with my buddies and also my baseball and glove which I threw the ball on top of the barn and let it roll down to catch it) High Tech Stuff – ( Transistor Radio - which I used for years to listen to WFLB and also picked up UNC , State and Duke Basketball games and when the weather was right, I could listen at night to the Cincinnati Reds play baseball) New High School – (SVHS class of 1974 ) Good job – (Winn Dixie - $1.60 per hour but I worked anytime they needed me and eventually I became full time making $2.65 per hour and was rolling in the dough) College Education – (where I worked washing pots and pans in the cafeteria to pay my bill) Guess I got all that because I was privileged....
