I have been trying for the best part of 5 years to write a poem about St George and the Dragon, but have never been able to get it to work So after many re - hashes and restarts i believe i have finally done it justice I hope you all enjoy it George And The Dragon There was a dragon who ruled the sky A demonic beast, with wings to fly. And he would travel every day, To a kingdom far away. The people of the kingdom fled, When they saw the shadow over head. Into their homes the they ran to hide, But made sure to leave their flock outside. The dragon dined on goat and sheep, then disappeared to his cave to sleep. And when the king was sure that all was well He ordered his men to ring the bell This went on for many a year, And the kingdom lived its days in fear For although the dragon, the sheep would eat Human being was his favourite meat. Now the kingdoms princess grew to be A woman of immense beauty And knights would travel from miles around To ask the king for his daughters hand The king agreed to all who’d ask as long as they would complete the task ‘You may have her hand, and my crown as well, If you send that dragon back to hell. The princess’ beauty was so rare That every knight who asked would dare But when they went to the dragons cave The dragon sent them to a fiery grave Until into the kingdom rode a knight His shield a blood red cross on a field of white Under his arm a golden lance And he asked the king to be given a chance The following morning at first light Rode out the brave and lonely knight Straight into the demons lair And whatever fate awaited there. Quietly the knight crept through the wood Until the cave entrance in a clearing stood And scattered across the clearings floor Were the bones of those who came before With Dragons fire and Golden lance The two engaged in a deadly dance Locked in battle for many an hour Until at last the knight began to tire. Collapsing down, short of breath looking at a certain death He watched the Dragon spread his wings apart And thrust his lance through the demons heart Back to the kingdom the knight did ride The dragons heart hung from his horses side The golden lance was melted in the forge To make a crown for the Knight called George
