I have been trying really hard not to react to all of this Ebola - TopicsExpress

I have been trying really hard not to react to all of this Ebola conspiracy nonsense but I’ve reached my limit! I trained in the United States Army as a preventive medicine specialist and in my 20 years in hospital management have supervised the infection control department. Fact: Ebola was identified in central Africa near the Ebola River in 1976. Fact: there have been about 15-20 outbreaks since then. All resolve in a matter of months. Fact: Ebola is an infectious disease that has no known cure but it is treatable. Fact: virus reservoir is some varieties of African monkeys. Fact: transmission is only possible with DIRECT contact with the person infected. Only documented transmission have been of family, caretakers, or health care workers directly involved in the care of an infected individual, villagers who have hunted African monkeys, and a couple of scientists working in the lab with Ebola viruses. Fact: high mortality in African countries relates to the lack of strong palliative measures in controlled settings and to poor infection control measures. In a country of 360 million people, two documented Ebola cases does not make a crisis. Thousands of American die every day of preventable diseases. Let’s get our priorities straight.
