I have been trying to determine the last time that Ashland has been to state baseball, as Platte Valley plays its first ever game at Class B State today in Blair. Yutan has been to the State Playoffs often, in Class C, over the last several years. But it has been some time since the Bluejays have gone. With the help of our own Rocket Man, Clay Anderson and a few others, like Wayne Harpin, I now have the answer. The year was 1975 and the Bluejays traveled to Gothenburg to play Wymore Southern. Wymore beat Ashland 9-7 and went on to win the tourney. Clay tells a great story in an email to myself and Bob Chrisler. We played in Gothenburg, NE against Wymore Southern and their HUGE curve-ball throwing pitcher L.G. Searcy. He would go on to play football for the Huskers. We lost, after leading most of the game. I think the lineup had me at SS, Mike Taylor II pitched, Wayne Harpin 1st, Mike Martin at 3rd, Roger Pike at 2nd, Kirby Anderson catching. Not sure about outfield, but I know Doug Clark was in RF. Tough to lose, as Wymore went on the win the next day to become champs. What I remember, as an 8 year old, was traveling on a bus to Gothenburg to watch the game. On the way home, Clays mother, Alice, a longtime speech therapist at Ashland-Greenwood, had me sit with her for awhile on the bus. When we arrived in Ashland, Mrs. Anderson told my mother that I couldnt say my Rs and that I would be in her class the coming fall. Thankfully Mrs. Anderson got me saying my Rs! She was very good at what she did and helped a ton of kids say their Rs over the years. Good luck to Platte Valley today. Bring home a state title!
