I have been working in the restaurant business for 13 years this month. And, have seen this behavior week after week. The simple question might be, why continue to allow staff to make errors on orders, or not have someone double check ALL orders before they leave the door...but the truth is, what if my cook, your cook, whomever, has poor reading skills, though cooks like an artist? What if businesses cant afford to hire someone to double check these orders because then they have to pass the burden of their salary onto the consumer by having to raise their prices? I have to believe EVERY restaurant in town, or anywhere, does their collective best to please the public. Although, there will always be that one person... And since Im already riding this high horse, let me add this: just last week, the wife of a very public figure told one of my waitresses, my kids, as I prefer to call them, that she should continue to hold her head up high, even if she had been reduced to doing the lowest possible job. My kids, every last one of them work their asses off every day. Some days, we may miss the mark, but we get up the next morning, and pursue excellence all over again. If youve never waited tables, perhaps youd be surprised at what they can earn, and what they endure to earn that salary. Largely, we do this type of work because we love dealing with YOU, love sharing part of your day, watching your beautiful families grow, and sharing a laugh or smile. In this big world, we can either be alone or live this life together, being supportive, and forgiving when we fail each other.
