I have chronic depression. Now some people might argue that I shouldnt let that define who I am. It is a label that restricts my definition of myself. Im smart. Im funny. (Strange and ha-ha). I am empathic. Those are labels just the same, but nobody claims they are restrictions or that I shouldnt let that define me. What is the difference? Stigma. Denying my depression is denying a part of me. A part that resonates in the rest of me, and colours the way I interpret and see the world. The exact same way I like to see the humour in things, or in how I care about my close friends. So if you have a mental illness, accept it, Acknowledge it. It isnt something to be ashamed about. It makes you who you are, and learning to live with it is the most important step to learning how to cope and manage it.
