I have come that they may have life and have it to the full (have it in abundance). The purpose of Jesus coming is that we might have life and also life more abundant. There is the life that now is and the life that is to come. In the teaching of Jesus and in the Epistles we find this distinction again and again this dual aspect of the gospel. What we have now and what is to come. Jesus spoke of “today” and “that day”, that day being the day of his return when the great restitution takes place. Peter spoke about it to the crowds in Jerusalem. Acts 3.20 God may send the Christ, who has been appointed for you—even Jesus. He must remain in heaven until the time comes for God to restore everything, as he promised long ago through his holy prophets. Eternal Life When you receive Jesus as Saviour you have eternal life. It is a present possession. John 3:36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life John 5:24 “I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. However eternal life is presented as a future prospect. Dan 12:2 Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt. Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever. Mat 19:29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. Tit 1:2… the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time, Tit 3:7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. 1Jn 2:25 and this is what he promised us—even eternal life. How do we understand this? How can I have eternal life now and yet it is a promise for the future? It is because of our present duality of being. The inward man and the outward man. Rom 8:10 but if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you. 2Co 4:16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.
