I have come to realize that some people are so loyal to failure and mediocrity that they admire and encourage it in others, because failure is easy to manage, and they can pity you for it, and in pity there is a certain amount of control, because feeling pathetic or worthless is submission. Regardless of what or who youre submitting to, you become open to influence, open to suggestion, open to manipulation, to control. Whether the controllers are conscious of their acts is no excuse for ignoring the fact that they are taking advantage of your diminished state, consciously or unconsciously exploiting a weak spot in your personal security/confidence. You may make excuses for this behavior, disagree with my hypothesis, or pretend its not happening, but the simplest test is to stand up for yourself in an argument with these people--really hold your ground, no compromise--and you will witness first hand the level of true respect they hold for you (and very likely for themselves). Pity, sympathy, and a kind ear to hear your troubles is a cheap substitute for actual respect and appreciation.
