I have come to the determination that backpedaling is a necessary evil when dealing with people to keep the peace and reduce conflict. I was speaking with a potential survey client last night and made a remark to the effect of finding the research was no big deal and she went off - She proceeded to berate me because it was a big deal to her... I had to backpedal and explain that I wasnt talking about her situation but how my retrieving the documents wasnt a problem. This occurred more than one in the conversation. In the end, she thanked me and seemed genuinely satisfied with our exchange. So - backpedal, elaborate, or do what is needed to prevent a simple conversation from escalating into a dispute and spiraling out of control.
