I have come to understand something about the megachurch. (My boss reminded me of this truth yesterday). They really do not want you to sing. They want you to sit back and be entertained. Congregational singing has not had a long history. Before the Second Great Awakening, congregational singing was considered polluting to the worship, since sinners could join in the singing and that was considered an abomination. With the Second Great Awakening, religion became about me and what I can do and want, and with it hymns and songs became common fare. With the new advent of super church and the praise band, now they want us to sit back and be entertained, or else they would sing something you knew well enough to join in.
