I have considered three things: 1. There is apparently a serious downturn in visitors arriving and staying in Vanuatu, (as against Cruise ship visits), with the flow on to the reality faced by workers in the Tourism industry to reduced hours of work and even layoffs. 2. Workers in the security industry are working long hours (often 12 hour days x 7 days a week) for low wages. 3. There is alledged abuse of worker entitlements by many stores. ...Is it time that Vanuatu moved to at the very least, abandoning the concept of the MINUMUM MONTHY WAGE a minimum HOURLY wage, rather than the month concept? here is my reasoning.... A. Whenever we look at overseas conditions, the talk is HOURLY rate. B. A month is not a fixed time period. Different months have different days (from 28 to 31). This leads to the DoL interpreting the act the best way they can for simplicity, by using a strange calculation to work out the hourly rate anyway (12 months, made up of 4 weeks per month, at 44 hours per week.) But 12 x 4 = 48 weeks so the other 4??? C. An hourly rate means that part timers or casuals can be employed or hours varied according to demand. D. An hourly rate is easy for a worker to follow and easier for complaints to be investigated by union and DoL. So instead of thinking of 30,000vt/month, the official line should be 157vt/hr. (360,000vt PA / 56 weeks / 44 hours per week) What do people think?
