I have debated whether to post this. It has had me very upset all day and I just want to say it to everybody I know. Today our family faced something that we have never faced before and it has thrown us for a loop. Id like to just share a couple of things and get this out. You have all seen pictures of our beautiful, precious Maizie. She reminds me so much of my grandmother who was a member of the Choctaw tribe. She is also very like her father who is Filipino. Her skin is the color of a very dark cafe latte. She draws attention wherever we go because she is beautiful and her smile will light up a room. She is creative and funny and so sweet. Today our baby came home with a picture that a classmate had drawn of her. On top of the page was written the word nigger. Thankfully she did not notice and thankfully her older sister, who can read did not notice and even if they had they have no clue what that word means. We were never allowed to use that word in my childhood and I raised my kids not to use it. I started not to spell it out but I wanted to show the whole world how ugly, how hateful and how evil that word and the intentions behind that word are. What kind of parent teaches a kindergartener that word? What kind of home sends a child into the world with that kind of attitude? People, thats not just a parenting fail, that is an epic fail of being a human being. We cant be mad at the kid. Hes SIX. We cant be mad at the school or the bus driver. We dont know who this childs parents are. But I would like to ask each one of you to take a good hard look at that word and take a good look at our baby and now imagine ANY CHILD of ANY RACE having to hear such a hate-filled word. I am ashamed for people. I am enraged at people. But all I can do is keep on doing what Ive always tried to do and what I have always tried to teach my children to do: Fight intolerance and racism and bigotry on ANY LINE and FOR ANY REASON. We are ALL HUMAN BEINGS. We have feelings and souls. God help this poor kid as he is raised to be just another bigot. And God help me to have a forgiving heart toward these ignorant people. Please pray for the whole damn situation.
