I have dinner at a particular high-end restaurant quite frequently, a fairly trendy place with a popular bar. To reach the bar, you have to walk through the large dining room, a trek that creates intense self-consciousness in most who undertake it. As they cross the room, you can see the men hold themselves more erect, the women acutely aware of their clothes, and of those of the other women in the room. Most appear uncertain that they deserve to be there - that theyre not pretty enough, that theyre not wealthy enough, that theyre not cool enough. Many seem to stagger under the burden of their chosen personae. Watching them the other night, I found myself thinking, Damn, how hard it must be to be human! And then, Hey, wait a second...!
