I have, for some time, found it rather distasteful (among, it would seem, people who have moved from modern liturgy back to traditional) that parishes say Here endeth the Epistle/Lesson followed by Thanks be to God. Why? Because it sounds as if the congregation is grateful that the reading is over. Nevertheless, I was recently reflecting on this and realized that the same problem exists with [The Mass is ended] Depart in Peace - Thanks be to God. So why, besides being a mindless response causing the conflation of two liturgical traditions, do I still find the former Thanks be to God so darn irritating? Is it the Hegelian in it all? The Thesis Endeth followed by the Antithesis Thanks causing a synthesis silliness?
