I have found out that many of the members in this facebook forum are there to subscribe to the Latin expression: E PLURIBUS UNUM --the USA motto which literally means in Latin IN DIVERSITY WE ARE ONE or the US interpretation: UNITY IN DIVERSITY. This comes to the adaptation of one language as the official or national language which the people from all linguistic walks of life agree. Indonesia has adopted BAHASA which was made into law by former President Sukarno, a Bahasa speaking native, which Indonesians with several indigenous languages (more than ours) have agreed. This is not true in our country because jealousy predominates the thinking of many. Famed writer F Sionil Jose continues to speak of our bad trait which includes INGGITAN as one of them during commencement speeches all over the Philippines that he keeps on getting invited. There are those who are against the adoption of one language whether it is Zambal or Tsabakano in our country and they will use an organisation whose mission is for diversity as the means to channel their hatred of one language. They are not really for diversity but there to show their hatred of one language. They would rather stick to using a foreign language such as English instead of adopting an indigenous tongue which is spoken and understood by Filipinos. Germany has adopted the Hoch Deutsch spoken by the royalties/monarchs, elite, including Martin Luther despite the fact that Germany has many languages and dialects that are related to the Hoch Deutsch. But since the people are not ethnocentric like many Filipinos, they have agreed to accept one official language. This is true also with Italy where there are several Italian languages and dialects but the people accept one Italian national language. The countries among several nations are embued with nationalistic fervour or nationalism. Sorry to say that most of our people are ethnocentric instead of being nationalistic. For a website to read a very academic source see susdiv.org/uploadfiles/RT1.2_PP_Durk.pdf and it will lead you to more than 4 dozen treatises and very academic oriented articles on the subject of linguistic pluralism and diversity. I am for diversity and I understand more than one Philippine native language. I also speak several foreign languages and now am learning the language of Tsar Nikolai because of my marriage to a native. I welcome the convention today to be held at Benitez Hall at the UP college of education and I wish I could be there. I thank the members who are there to promote language diversity and not to use the forum to propagate their hate of one specific language.
